When Indira Gandhi Described Veer Savarkar As A 'Remarkable Son Of India'
In 2019, a controversy erupted after Congress party vehemently opposed Conferring India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, to one of India’s greatest heroes Veer Savarkar. It was during that time a letter written by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi referring Veer Savarkar as a ‘remarkable son of India’ surfaced on social media. In a letter dated May 30, 1980, Indira Gandhi wrote to Pandit Bakhle, then secretary of Swatantrayaveer Savarkar Rashtriya Smarak, expressing her reverence for one of India’s greatest freedom fighters Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. These question arises when one reads the 18-month correspondence between Madhu Dandavate, a five-time Member of Parliament from the Rajapur constituency of Maharashtra and his wife Pramila, a political activist, who were imprisoned during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Lodged in separate jails — Madhu in Bangalore Central Jail and Pramila in Yerwada Central Jail – they wrote nearly 200 letters to each other during captivity.
