Sonalben Patel is an Indian table tennis player. She was born on 15 September 1987 in Viramgam, Gujarat. Her zodiac sign is Virgo. She did her schooling from Geeta Higher Secondary School. She earned a diploma from ITI. 

Her father’s name is Manubhai Patel, and her mother’s name is Labhuben Patel. 

She is married to fellow para-athlete Ramesh Chaudhary.

Sonalben Patel is an international para table tennis player. She made headlines for clinching bronze medal in the table tennis women’s singles event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, UK. 

As per reports, Sonalben Patel contracted polio when she was 6 months old. The illness resulted in her losing mobility in both her legs. 

Sonalben Patel shared in an interview that her dream was to become a teacher. However, she could not accomplish her dream due to being rejected for her disability. 

Sonalben Patel’s journey as a para-athlete

After facing rejection, Sonalben Patel joined the Blind People’s Association (BPA) and pursued a diploma course at ITI. She started her table tennis journey from there. The superintendent of the ITI department encouraged her to make a career in table tennis. 

Sonalben Patel has participated in many national and international championships. She started her journey as a professional player in the year 2008. 

The Government of Karnataka awarded her with the Eklavya Award in the year 2014. 

In the year 2021, she represented India at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. She lost to a South Korean table tennis player Lee Mi Gyu. 

Commonwealth Games

In 2022, she participated in Fa40 Egypt Para Open and made history by winning two gold medals and one bronze medal.

In 2022, Sonalben Patel won her first medal in singles event at the Commonwealth Games. She defeated United Kingdom’s tennis player Sue Baily with 3-0 score and clinched a bronze medal in the women’s singles event.
