Shashi Kapoor started his Bollywood journey as a child actor. He worked in Raj Kapoor's films like ‘Aag’ and ‘Awaara.’ He was the youngest brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. His father, Prithiviraj, wanted him to establish his career on his own. As a result, Shashi Kapoor joined a theatre company to pursue his acting career.

During his theatre career, Shashi Kapoor crossed paths with Jennifer Kendal. The two fell in love and decided to marry. However, initially, Prithiviraj Kapoor opposed the idea of his son marrying a foreigner. Shashi Kapoor tied the knot with Jennifer Kendal in the year 1958 without the blessings of his family.

In the year 1961, Shashi Kapoor made his debut as a leading actor in Yash Chopra’s film Dharmputra. He appeared in numerous hit films with Amitabh Bachchan. The two worked together in films like Shaan, Namak Halal, Suhaag, and Deewar.

After starring in several blockbuster hits, his career saw setbacks like Prem Patra, Chaar Deewari, and Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath. These flop films led to a decline in his career. During the challenging period in his acting career, he received support from actress Nanda. The two worked in film Jab Jab Phool Khile which turned out to be a success.

Shashi Kapoor’s wife battled with cancer for two years and succumbed to the disease. He was devastated by the loss. The couple spent 28 years together.

Shashi Kapoor is counted among the most celebrated figures in the Bollywood industry. During his lifetime, he was honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 79.
