Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician. She was born on 5 January 1955 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Her zodiac sign is Capricorn. She completed her schooling from Deshbandhu Shishu School, Kolkata. She earned a BA degree from Jogmaya Devi College, an MA degree from University of Calcutta, and LLB degree from Jogesh Chandra Chaudhary College of Law. 

Her father’s name was Promileshwar Banerjee, and her mother’s name was Gayatri Devi. She has six brothers.

At the young age of 15, Mamata Banerjee joined the Indian National Congress.

She served as the General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. 

She was the first woman General Secretary of West Bengal from 1976 to 1980.

Youngest MP

In the 1984 general elections, she became the youngest MP of the state by defeating veteran communist politician Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur parliamentary constituency of West Bengal.

In the general elections of 1991, Mamata was again elected Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal and then she continued winning the elections from the same seat till 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009.

Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress

Mamata Banerjee founded her own party ‘All India Trinamool Congress’ in the year 1997. 

She played a pivotal role in the renovation of Indian railway trains in the year 2002. She improved passenger facilities in express trains and contributed to the establishment of IRCTC web site. 

Mamata Banerjee became the Union Railway Minister in the Indian National Congress-led government in 2009.

First Woman Chief Minister of West Bengal

Mamata Banerjee became the first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal in the year 2011 after serving several times as a Union Cabinet Minister.

In 2012, one of her paintings ‘Flower Power’ was auctioned at an event in New York with a price of $2500 and after 5 bids it was sold for $3000.

On 5 May 2021, she took oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the third time.
