Beijing: Almost a week after the Chinese head of the international police intelligence agency Interpol Meng Hongwei went missing, the French police have initiated an investigation into his mysterious disappearance.

Hongwei was last seen late-September, when he was about to leave for China from Interpol's headquarters in Lyon, south-east France.

The probe was launched after Hongwei’s wife filed a missing report.

According to Agence France-Presse, Hongwei, who is a senior Communist Party official, did not disappear in France and he left the country on September 29.

Hongwei was the vice minister of public security in China before he was elected as the head of Interpol in November 2016.

There are also several speculations about Chinese Fan Bingbing’s whereabouts. The 37-year-old actress, who appeared in the X-Men and Iron Man films, was last seen on July 1 and it is believed that she has been held in secret detention since then.
