On this day, the Constitution of India came into force in 1950. We all know about the man who led the drafting committee of this holy book of law – Dr. BR Ambedkar. But, how many of you know about the 2 civil servants working in the Constituent Assembly Secretariat, during that time, without whom the Indian democratic project would have probably never got off the ground. Let’s find out more about the two men who built India’s democracy, but you’ve probably never heard of them, in this episode of India Untold with Sunita Iyer.

It took the Constituent Assembly more than two years to finalise a draft of our Constitution that would define the Republic status of India. After making over 2000 amendments, the draft was finally concluded on 26 November 1949. Naturally, the Assembly wanted this foundation of law, which represents the diversity in India, to be adorned with artworks. Prem Behari Narain Raizada was approached to embellish the contents of the Constitution with his fine calligraphy. And it was Nandalal Bose and his students that brought the rich history and heritage of India to the pages of the Constitution.

The makers of our Constitution had rightly left out the word Secularism but is was inserted much later. Let us take a look at why BR Ambedkar, the father of our Constitution left out the word and why it was inserted following a controversial amendment years later

 

R Ambedkar had rightly written in 1940 about the weakness of the Congress in its dealing with the Muslim community. He wrote that the policy of concession has increased Muslim aggressiveness.

The opposition harped on the word secular as they referred to the Constitution while speaking on issues such as the NRC and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. However, it does look like they don’t understand the difference between the true meaning of being secular and pseudo-secular.
 

Babasaheb Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits) and supported the rights of women and workers. He died on December 6, 1956.

November 26 of every year is celebrated as Constitution Day, as it is the day on which the Constitution was adopted. It was first celebrated in 2015, as a tribute to Father of the Constitution BR Ambedkar. The Indian Constitution that has over 90,000 words is the work of 271 men and women who were part of the constituent assembly that drafted it.
