Mathura. Seema Chapadia is a resident of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. She used to work at a school before she had to leave her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since her childhood, she had a passion for sewing and embroidery. She utilized her free time during the lockdown and began making dresses for the idols of Lord Krishna. Her designs were intricate and received appreciation from her customers. As she began receiving consistent positive response, she decided to share her designs on social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. She collaborated with a tailor and expanded her business. Today, she provides employment to 30 women in her community.

The beginnings

Seema had to leave her first job considering the health of young children at home. In September 2020, she initiated with her work, and with her husband’s encouragement, she posted pictures on social media. She received positive feedback which led her to expand the business. Gradually, she began working with 2 to 3 tailors. For better reach, her husband suggested to sell the items in wholesale.

First factory

Women lack opportunities to establish themselves as independent individuals, but they too dream of contributing and earning income for the household. With a vision to empower these women, Seema reached out to the women in her locality to encourage them to join hands with her. Women began joining her endeavour where she taught them the necessary skills. In July 2022, she established a factory for making dresses for idols of Kanha Ji. Today, Seema works with 30 women who are employed in her factory.

Turning a hobby into a business

Seema had a creative streak since childhood. She fostered exceptional skills in sewing, embroidery, painting, and cooking from a young age. When she found herself with a lot of time on her hands during the lockdown, she was compelled to devote her efforts entirely to creating something new and embarking on a new adventure. During this time, she was able to transform her hobby into a fulfilling career path. She expresses gratitude for her husband’s unwavering support, which played a pivotal role in her journey to success. The dresses created by Seema are widely liked in Mathura and Vrindavan.

Promoting equality

Seema highlights the challenges women face when embarking on their business journeys. She wants more women to pursue their aspirations by starting from home and gradually expanding their endeavours. Furthermore, she appeals to men to actively support the women in their families. Women are capable of doing so much in life but face hindrances due to family responsibilities. If equal opportunities are provided to women then a harmony can be created in the world, promoting gender equality.
