In the year 2009, Nand Kishore Verma, a teacher at a private school in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, launched a project focused on water and river conservation. As part of his project, he refrained from using excessive water for bathing and washing dishes. Subsequently, he embarked on a mission to raise awareness about the importance of saving groundwater and controlling water pollution. He conducted research on both groundwater and surface water sources. Today, his work inspires many individuals to conserve and protect the environment.

A meeting with Sunderlal Bahuguna

Some 15 years ago, Nand Kishore Verma had the opportunity of meeting Sunderlal Bahuguna, a renowned environmentalist and key figure in the Chipko movement, at a book fair in Lucknow. Nand Kishore learned about Bahuguna’s commitment to save the environment. This inspired him to embark on his journey to save the environment. Today, he is recognized as ‘Jaldoot’ meaning ‘Water Hero.’

Giving coaching classes was a second means of earning for Nand Kishore. However, when he decided to give that up to dedicate his time to environmental work instead, he faced criticism from family and friends. Despite the discouragement, he began studying about river and water resources to make a difference.

Receiving training

In the beginning of his journey, Nand Kishore Verma wrote to the Uttarakhand Administration Academy, seeking information and guidance. The academy supported his endeavours and accepted his request. Subsequently, he received training in Nainital. He also attended sessions at renowned institutions across the country and then began organizing his own workshops.

A unique project

In the year 2010, Nand Kishore began exploring various states in the country to study the significance of rivers and lakes on his motorcycle. So far, he has travelled to 10 states. He has conducted around one thousand street meetings to raise awareness about the environmental issues. He has also earned recognition from the Limca Book of Records. Nand Kishore’s aim is to spread awareness through his stories on 108 lesser-known local rivers, highlighting their significance.

National Water Hero

Initially, Nand Kishore struggled to bring the locals’ attention to water conservation projects. To emphasize its importance, he even began composing couplets titled ‘Jaldoot Ke Dohe’ to effectively convey his message. His efforts earned him the prestigious ‘National Water Hero’ honour in 2021. Presently, he serves as a river expert within the District Ganga Committee in Lucknow. His team works in seven states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Haryana.
