Shahjahanpur: Powayan district in Shahjahanpur is often referred to as ‘Mini Punjab’ for its innovative farming methods. Deepak Kumar, a resident of Gangasara, cultivates melons on an extensive scale, which has also earned him the title of the state’s largest melon producer. Let’s read about his farming journey.

Education

In the year 2005, Deepak Kumar completed his MCom degree from Shukdevanand Degree College. Since he had no land of his own, he took land on lease from other farmers for 4 months and began cultivating melons. Today, he cultivates melons on an impressive 356 acres of leased land. His immense dedication serves as an inspiration for others in the farming community.

Farming journey

After the potato harvest, the lands remain vacant for a certain period. Deepak Kumar had an innovative idea and leased agricultural land from farmers for around Rs 25 to 30 thousand per acre, during this time. The farmers would prepare and hand over the fields to him after the potato harvest. Deepak utilized these fields to grow melons for a period of four months.

High-quality seeds

Deepak Kumar sources seeds for various melon varieties from abroad, primarily from Thailand and Taiwan. The seeds from these countries are renowned for their good quality. Remarkably, these seeds come with a price tag of Rs 30,000 to Rs 95,000 per kilogram.

Market supply

Around 2500-3000 quintals of melons are cultivated during a season. These are sent to the markets of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Bihar for sales. Traders also place orders for melons on the phone. The melons are primarily supplied to 40-50 markets across Uttar Pradesh.

Earnings in crores

The earnings from Deepak Kumar’s farming business are quite substantial. With approximately 150-200 quintals of melons per acre, he generates an income of more than Rs 3 crore in just a four-month season. Moreover, he also provides employment opportunities to the locals through his endeavours.
