He once failed his pre-board maths exam at school, yet went on to score 90% in the final. He also faced failure in college, but never gave up on his dream of becoming an IAS officer. Today, Kumar Anurag is the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation in a district of Bihar. Childhood and Early Education

Kumar Anurag spent his early years in Katihar, Bihar. He studied in a Hindi-medium school until Class 8. When he later joined an English-medium school, the language barrier proved to be challenge. But with hard work and dedication, he slowly overcame it. In Class 10, he scored an impressive 90%. Yet in his Class 12 pre-board exams, he failed in Mathematics. Undeterred, he worked harder and scored 94% in Maths in the final exams.

Struggles During College

Though Anurag passed his school exams with a first division, he couldn’t secure admission into IIT due to low marks in some subjects. Instead, he joined the prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) at Delhi University. His academic journey remained challenging; he even failed in his second year at college. But that failure became a turning point. He took it as a wake-up call and decided to take his studies more seriously.

After completing his graduation, he pursued post-graduation and began preparing for the Civil Services Examination, considered one of the toughest exams in India.

Cracking the UPSC

In 2017, Anurag cleared the UPSC exam on his first attempt with an All India Rank of 667. Still, he wasn’t satisfied, his dream was to become an IAS officer. He tried again in 2018, putting in even more effort, and this time secured the 48th rank. Before becoming an IAS officer, Kumar Anurag also worked as an Assistant Director in the Indian Economic Service between March and August 2019.
