The Indian Railways is a common means of transportation for most Indians. It is also the fourth largest railway network in India. While all stations across the country are managed by the Railway Department, there is a railway station in Rajasthan that holds the unique distinction of being operated by the local villagers. No railway officer or government servant is stationed here, and yet the trains travel with no interruption. The funds collected from the purchased tickets are deposited in the railway account. Let’s delve deeper into the story of this railway station.

Rashidpura Khori

This unique railway station is situated in Rashidpura Khori in Rajasthan. From 2009 to 2015, the villagers managed the railway station duties, and they continue to manage the responsibilities till date. The villagers handle ticket bookings for passengers. They also maintain cleanliness and security arrangements.

Inspiring story of the villagers

The Rashidpura Khori railway station is situated on the route from Jaipur to Churu. As per reports, it was shut down by the Railway Department in 2005 due to financial losses. This resulted in significant transportation issues for the locals. The local residents made efforts to find a solution to the problem. In 2009, an agreement was made with the government to reopen the railway station under the condition that 3,00,000 tickets needed to be purchased to keep the station operational. The villagers joined hands and collected the funds to meet the requirement. Consequently, the railway station was reopened.

Collective responsibility

After the railway station resumed operations, the villagers shouldered the responsibility of maintaining the station, ensuring cleanliness, and arranging clean water for passengers. The villagers’ spirit reflects their strong sense of community, resilience, and determination to overcome challenges. Their efforts truly reaffirm the faith in unity which is pivotal in achieving a better future.
