Pavan Guntupalli's Early Career and Struggles
After graduating from IIT, Pavan Guntupalli began his career at Samsung, gaining experience in the technology sector. After working abroad for a few years, he returned to India with the dream of starting his own venture. He faced failure with six startups but refused to give up. He then co-founded a logistics startup, theKarrier, with his friend Arvind Sanka. While innovative, the company faced ground-level challenges and eventually closed.
How did Pavan Guntupalli get the idea for Rapido?
Undeterred by his previous setbacks, Pavan Guntupalli turned his attention to the problem of traffic congestion. While cab services like Ola and Uber existed, they were expensive. He observed that people in smaller cities, beyond metros, also faced daily traffic woes and high fares. Understanding this problem, he launched Rapido, a bike taxi service offering a faster, more affordable, and convenient travel option.
Pavan Guntupalli's Rapido Idea Rejected 75 Times, Then Found Success
The journey wasn't easy. Pavan faced rejection from 75 investors. Many doubted Rapido's ability to compete with giants like Ola and Uber. The turning point came when Pawan Munjal, Chairman of Hero MotoCorp, saw the potential in Rapido and invested. Other investors followed, and Rapido officially launched in 2016.
Rapido's Unique and Affordable Service Model
While Ola and Uber focused on metro cities, Rapido targeted smaller cities, aiming to provide affordable and reliable transport in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. Initially, Rapido's pricing of ₹15 base fare and ₹3 per kilometer was highly affordable but posed a profitability challenge. However, Pavan Guntupalli and his team's hard work and innovation gradually established and scaled the service.
Rapido Now Available in Over 100 Cities
Today, Rapido operates in over 100 cities, boasting over 50 million app downloads, 700,000 active users, and 50,000 riders. Rapido's current valuation exceeds ₹93.5 billion (approximately $1 billion). Food delivery giant Swiggy is a major investor. The company's annual revenue has now crossed ₹10 billion.
