She never cared about extreme heat or rainfall or biting cold, she relentlessly continued her studies and won 9 gold medals in the convocation ceremony of Gorakhpur University.

Who is Rachna Gupta?

Rachna Gupta is a resident of Dhobi Tola near Garudpar, Devaria. Her father runs a small kiosk where he sells sweets. He is a high school graduate whereas Rachna’s mother never studied after class 5. Rachna has three siblings, two brothers and a sister, she is the youngest of them all. 

Rachna completed her schooling from Devaria Modern City Montessori School. She pursued her bachelor's degree from Gorakhpur University and then earned an MSc degree in maths with 93.05 marks. 

Journey to university

Rachna’s university is situated 60 kilometres away from her residence. She would leave at 7 in the morning everyday and would reach Gorakhpur by a train. It usually used to take her an hour to go home from university and vice versa. 

Her determination can be understood from the fact that she never missed a single class of her university. She was aware of the fact that her father was collecting penny by penny just to make sure that she received the best education. She did want to let her father and her family down. 

Father’s hard work

Rachna’s father, Raj Kumar Gupta wakes up at 4 in the morning to prepares fresh sweets for sale. He makes use of the rooftop space of the house to not disturb the entire family. At 7 am, he can be seen selling his sweets at the Kotwali intersection. After making Rs 500 in a day, he comes back home late in the night. For past 25 years, Raj Kumar has been involved with the same work. With his small income, he has provided education to all of his kids. 

Parents’ reaction to Rachna’s accomplishments

During the convocation ceremony of Gorakhpur University, Rachna was awarded with 9 gold medals for her extraordinary performance in studies. Rachna’s parents started crying upon hearing the news. It was a special bonding moment for the entire family. The parents saw their hard work paying off and they became emotional. 

Rachna shares that her father never owned a mobile phone or a bike only to save up money. He never used a phone thinking that that would unnecessarily increase his monthly expenses. Furthermore, Rachna shares that she has completed her academic studies and now she will begin preparing for civil services exam.
