Surat: The problem of electricity in the rural areas has existed for many years without effective solutions. Dungar Singh Sodha grew up in a village of Barmer, Rajasthan, and faced childhood struggles to study in well-lit places, especially at night, due to the lack of electricity. When he moved to Surat for his higher education, the thought of other students facing similar challenges fuelled his determination. He set up a windmill that cost him less than the cost of a mobile phone. With a mere investment of Rs 50,000, he launched his startup and transformed the landscape of his village. 

Launching a startup

The prolonged power failures inspired Dungar Singh Sodha to address the electricity problem. After completing his studies and working in Surat, Gujarat, he faced challenges in coming up with innovative solutions. He ventured into entrepreneurship and successfully implemented his windmill model. His startup is called Sunwind. 

Dungar Singh Sodha initiated this venture with an investment of Rs 50,000. He did not have an office space initially. To kickstart the work, his friend provided him with an office. The portable nature of the windmill allows it to be relocated anywhere. With the capacity of one horsepower, this windmill can generate up to 20 units of electricity per day.

Gaining recognition

At the Vibrant Gujarat Summit that was held on 10 January, Dungar Singh Sodha gave a presentation of his model. Subsequently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth Rs 50 crore with the Gujarat government. The remarkable response has led to several companies expressing interest in providing advance funds for production. During the presentation, Dungar highlighted the versatility of his windmill, catering to the common people. This innovation can also benefit the armed forces. 

Features of the windmill

Dungar Singh initially created a small, well-received makeshift windmill. This portable windmill, easily transportable to fields or farmhouses, is just of the right size. Notably, it stands out for its quick and convenient installation, allowing electricity generation shortly after setup.
