With the aim of improving the well-being of its factory workers, Apple ecosystem is planning to create over 78,000 housing units for its workforce. 

The company has created around 150,000 direct jobs in India over the past two and a half years. The residential arrangements are done to enhance the security, efficiency, and overall welfare of their employees. 

Apple started the initiative to emulate the housing settings similar to China and Vietnam. The plan is to create most of the housing units in the state of Tamil Nadu as it has the largest number of its workforce, around 58,000. 

Manufacturers and suppliers such as Foxconn, State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), SPR India, and Tata Group are involved in the process of developing the residential units. These units will be built under the public-private partnership, embarking on the biggest private project of its kind. 

According to Apple, the plan is to complete the construction and inaugurate the houses by March 31, 2025. The house plan is mainly designed for women workers and their safety and efficiency, as many of these women, aged between 19 and 24, hail from different places and constitute a significant proportion of the workforce. 

Currently, the workers reside in different rented apartments and have to take long bus rides to reach their workplaces. The officials highlighted that the government aims to provide security and content for the workers from different areas from all over the nation. 

Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, S Krishnan stated, "That is why you need to ensure that they are given good-quality housing somewhere close to the factory as that improves productivity, conditions of work and it also results in better welfare outcomes for the workers."
