New Delhi: With an ensemble star cast, Kalank, had caused quite a stir with their music and interesting teasers. However, the first-day reviews of the movie were largely disappointing with many terming the movie as not living up to its hype.

The movie marks an extremely emotional project for Johar since it was the last film worked on by his father, Dharma Productions helmer, late Yash Johar. The filmmaker-producer took to Instagram to share a heartfelt note calling it a 'film that was born in my heart and mind 15 years ago.'

Set in the 1940s, the film was originally supposed to star Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt but the film was shelved after pre-production. However, the new edition features actors Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in lead roles. The movie also stars  Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur among others and is directed by Abhishek Varman who has earlier helmed 2 States.

Kalank's amassed a collection of 22 crores on day 1 beating Akshay Kumar's Kesari to become the highest opening day grosser of 2019. However, with a total budget of around 110 crores, Kalank needs to cross 140 crores to be declared a hit.

The poor reviews may just hinder the movie's journey towards being a hit even as experts say that the extended Easter weekend may just swing the scales in its favour.

It remains to be seen whether the negative word of mouth the movie may stop Kalank from crossing 80 crore mark in the first weekend to achieve the golden figures.
