No need for driving tests at RTO: New driving license rules effective from June 1

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India is set to introduce new rules and regulations for driving license from June 1, 2024. The purpose is to make the process of obtaining driving license accessible and much easier. This new action has been taken in response to the concerns of corruption complaints in the transport department.

The current process involved various steps from form filling to written and driving tests. Over the years, complaints were filed about the widespread corruption within the system. To tackle these issues, the Ministry has announced a rule change in simplifying the whole process. 

New rules to come in effect from June 1:

•    The application process remains unchanged. You need to log in to the official website of Parivahan. Create an account, fill in the required details.

•    Applicants can also visit the nearest RTO office to submit their applications. 

•    The new rule states that for obtaining a driving license, you will now have the option to take the driving test at the nearest driving centre. You don't need to appear for the driving test at RTO. An applicant would be eligible to receive a permanent driving license if they possess a certificate of driving test from a private driving training centre.

Penalties for driving without a driving license:

•    A fine of Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 will be imposed if a person is caught driving without a driving license.

•    If a minor is found driving a vehicle, action will be taken against their parents, and a fine of up to Rs 25,000 may be imposed. The RC may also be cancelled.
