Dhaka: Fani, the strongest cyclone yet, which originated in the Indian Ocean, after hitting India’s eastern State of Odisha on Friday, has hit Bangladesh Saturday morning.

At least 14 people were killed on Friday and Saturday due to heavy rainfall, lightning and a cyclonic whirlwind.

A woman, Rani Begum, 45, wife of Shamsul Haque, was killed inside her house when the house in South Dighaldi union of Bhola district sadar collapsed.

Besides, a trawler sank on the way to the cyclone shelter at Kachuakhali Char of Lalmohon. Four to five people were badly injured in the accident.

A septuagenarian woman of Char Algi village under Ramgati upazila (sub-district) in Laxmipur district was killed, too. She was killed when a part of her house fell on her during the storm.

Jhumur, a sixth grader, 12, was killed in the Char Kakra union of Companiganj upazila under Noakhali district.

An infant was killed under the debris of a house when the whirlwind struck Char Aminul Haque village of Char Wapda union in Subarna Char area. At least 30 residents were injured in this incident. The dead child has been identified as Ismail, son of Abdur Rahman.

A housewife, Shahrun Begum, 50, was killed when a branch of a tree fell on her during the cyclonic hit.

At least six people, including children, were killed due to heavy rainfall and lightning in Mithamoin, Itna and Pakundia upazilas in the Kishoreganj district on Friday.

A 7-year child was killed when lightning struck him while he was coming from a nearby haor (backswamp) with cattle in the Mithamoin upazila.

Mohiuddin, 22, who hailed from Biramchar village of Boirati union of the upazila, was killed due to lightning while he was harvesting paddy in the field. In the Itna upazila, Rubel Das, 26, a farmer, was killed due to lightning while on the way home after cutting paddy in the field.

A farmer Asad Miah, 45, was killed due to lightning while cutting grass in the field in the Pakundia upazila. The incident took place in the Koshakanda village of Shikhia union Friday. Nurunnnahar , daughter of late Halimuddim from Char Algi, and Mojibur Rahman,17, son of Innas Ali, were killed, too.

Abdul Bareq, 35, a farmer, was killed in lightning as he went to harvest paddy in a haor in the Madan upazila of Netrokona district.

Lightning killed Apel Mia, 20, a farmer, who hailed from Bagdahar village of the Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district at around 7 PM on Friday.
