Port Moresby: The passengers of the Air Niugini Boeing 737-800 had the worst scare of their lives when the plane missed the runway and ditched into a lagoon and they had to swim to survive.

The incident happened on Friday when the Papua New Guinea's Air Niugini plane attempted a landing at the Weno airport in Micronesia.

However, the pilot ended up overshooting the runway and the aircraft was lodged into the Chuuk lagoon and immediately began sinking.

Pictures that surfaced online showed rescuers helping people getting up on small boats.

All 36 passengers and 11 crew were safe and did not suffer any major injury, according to local reports.

However, what caused the crash is still unclear. Currently, Papua New Guinea's Accident Investigation Commission is looking into the matter.
