Picking up spam calls can pose a risk to your financial safety. Whether you’re a business owner or an employee, it is important to employ some measures while receiving these fraudulent calls. These calls can empty your bank accounts if you fall into their trap. Even a minor mistake from your side can expose you to cybercrime. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) advises mobile users to exercise caution when receiving spam calls. 

Mobile scam calls often try to trick people into disclosing their personal information. TRAI has announced the upcoming launch of a tracker called CNAP, which will provide details of the Aadhar card linked to the caller’s SIM. It’s important to stay alert if you receive calls from unknown numbers or spam callers. Here are six steps to help you identify scam calls. 

It is a scam call if:

•    The caller tries to pry into sensitive information. 
•    A spam caller may also impersonate as a relative or a friend to ask for money. 
•    The caller may demand money or threaten legal action or other consequences. 
•    You may be asked about access to your device. 
•    A caller may promise a lottery win or prize in exchange for information.
•    It’s a scam call if you are asked about your PIN, OTP, or other verification codes. 

Stay alert

If you detect a scam call, immediately cut the call and don’t continue the conversation. Note down the number and report it on the official website of TRAI https://trai.gov.in/complain-or-report-against-ucc for further action on the scam call. Do not reveal any personal information on the call. You can also register a complaint regarding unwanted calls from spam numbers through the TRAI DND app.
