Meerut: When a community comes together to make the society a better place to live, everything falls into place, creating harmony. The Tagore Park in Shastri Nagar in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh speaks of heartening contributions made by a group of dedicated individuals. The park boasts of eco-friendly flowerpots, lush greenery, and clean spaces for children to play. The maintenance and preservation of this space is done by Senior Citizens’ Club 60. Some five years ago, MC Rastogi, a resident of Meerut, formed a group of people over the age of 60 to engage in a healthy lifestyle.

Shiksha Setu

The efforts of Club 60 go beyond just maintaining the garden. The group members also assist in providing support for educational purposes under the initiative ‘Shiksha Setu.’ Club director Hari Bishnoi started this effort when he learned about a classmate of his son who faced financial struggles and his mother’s disability. The kid supported himself by offering tuition classes. This prompted Hari Bishnoi to take the initiative to assist children from underprivileged backgrounds.

For a better future

The group members employ various methods to provide necessary information to the children in need. In addition to disseminating information about government educational schemes, the group also educates these children themselves. The initial focus involves waiving fees for children facing financial challenges due to poverty. Stationary items and essential resources like books and clothing are also provided. The initiative also extends to career counselling, aiming to pave the way for a brighter future for these children.

Funds for assistance

To children above 18 years of age, the team of senior citizens provides training in self-employment. Additionally, they assist in facilitating loans. Club members also engage in teaching in slum areas. Friends and family members of these senior citizens make contributions to Shiksha Setu, and these funds are directly sent to schools and colleges to support the education of needy children.

The dedicated efforts of the entire team are yielding positive results. Post-retirement, engaging in activities that contribute to society helps people to lead happier lives.
