In the early days, Arup Varma’s family faced financial difficulties. When his father found a job as a teacher at a private school in Kolkata, his family relocated to the city in hopes of new opportunities. Arup struggled with walking in his childhood, but he overcame all obstacles and defied expectations. Today, he works as professor at a university in Chicago, USA, showcasing the power of perseverance. 

Family background

During Arup Varma’s childhood, his parents were worried about his health particularly regarding his delayed ability to walk. The family faced financial constraints and lived in a one-room modest house. Despite all the challenges, Arup’s mother wanted to provide the best education to her son and ensured that he attended school regularly alongside his elder brother. 

Educational background

Arup Varma pursued a BSc Honours degree from Kolkata, and later attended Xavier’s School of Management, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. He was able to secure a job at renowned pharmaceutical company Ranbaxy. Growing up, he supported his father’s business. He dedicated long hours, starting from 5 in the morning until 9 in the night. 

Teaching at universities

Arup Varma worked at Computers Limited from 1987 to 1990. However, his passion for continuing education remained strong. Driven by his aspirations, he pursued PhD at Rutgers University in America. Upon completing his doctorate, he secured a position as an Assistant Professor at Loyola University Chicago in 1996. Since then, he has gained immense recognition and has shared his expertise through management classes in over 80 countries.
