The Indian Armed Forces are planning to create more unity among the Indian Navy, Army, and Air force by turning Mumbai into a 'Tri-Service' common defence station for the three services.

The top military officials are currently deliberating about the station and the final decision will be made public soon. At the moment, only Andaman and Nicobar has a fully established tri-service command in 2001.

There has been several instances of efforts being made to create alliances in the three services like the cross-service postings. According to the cross-service posting, senior officers of the Brigadier and Major General and equivalent can be transferred and posted to different services.

The common defence station in Mumbai will consist of a integration of all the three services; Indian Army, Navy, and Indian Airforce. Elements like infrastructure, logistics, repair and maintenance, and stores and supplies will be constructed to make the most of the resources and function under the unified leadership.

According to experts, the Navy will be the lead service for the common defence station as they have a more prominent presence in the city. For now, the three services work separately in the city, but proposal for the common defence station plans to utilise these services under one hierarchy.

Speaking on the alliance an officer said, "Some of the areas identifled for jointness and synergy include creation of common logistics support pools in stations where two or more Services are located. The Army and Navy, for instance, should share their logistics in Mumbai to avoid duplication and save resources. The CDS also said efforts will be made to cut out Infructuous ceremonial activities, which are manpower intensive."
