The Ludhiana Court, presided over by the Extra District Judge Shatin Goyal, dismissed a request to delay the release of Imtiaz Ali's upcoming film 'Amar Singh Chamkila'. Starring renowned actors Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, the film is scheduled to debut on Netflix on Friday, April 12. The court's decision to reject the plea came on Wednesday, opting instead to defer the case and grant the filmmakers time to furnish a written response. Consequently, no injunctions were issued against the film's release, with the next hearing slated for May 6.

The Legal Dispute

The legal tussle ensued after Ishdeep Singh Randhawa, a resident of Patiala, petitioned the court on April 8, seeking a perpetual injunction to halt the film's release. Randhawa asserted that the rights to the biopic of the late Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila were acquired by his late father, Gurdev Singh, a prominent figure in the Punjabi cinema as a director and producer. According to Randhawa, Chamkila's first wife, Gurmail Kaur, purportedly sold the exclusive rights to his father. He alleged that a legal agreement was formalized on October 12, 2012, wherein Gurmail Kaur received Rs 5 lakh in exchange for relinquishing the rights.

Following his father's demise in November 2022, Randhawa, as the legal heir, claimed ownership of the rights to produce a film on Chamkila's life. Asserting familial entitlement, Randhawa sought to impede the release of Imtiaz Ali's cinematic portrayal of the iconic Punjabi musician.
