Bengaluru: Indian cricketers have lashed out at former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi for his controversial comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kashmir.

World Cup winners Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina gave a befitting reply to Afridi for criticising PM Modi. A video has gone viral where Afridi is seen making comments on Modi.

Afridi was talking to people in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK). He also said he wishes to see a team from Kashmir in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Twenty20 tournament.

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan and former all-rounder Yuvraj, who have previously supported Afridi in charity works, said they are ending their friendship with the Pakistani.

On his Twitter account on Sunday (May 17), Yuvraj wrote, “Really disappointed by @SAfridiOfficial ‘s comments on our Hon’b PM @narendramodi ji. As a responsible Indian who has played for the country, I will never accept such words. I made an appeal on your behest for the sake of humanity. But never again. Jai Hind (sic).”

“I thought he was our friend but this not how a friend behaves. Ye badtameezi hai (It’s rude). He should have stayed within his limits but unfortunately keeps on talking rubbish about our country and our PM (Narendra Modi). What I did for him was in good faith and people suffering due to the coronavirus. But from now on no further relations with him. No more message or helping him. He has to learn how to respect other people,” ,” Harbhajan told Sports Tak.

He added, “Even our Prime Minister has said that coronavirus is a fight that extends beyond borders, religions, and caste. So we were very clear with the cause that we were promoting, which was simply to help those in crisis.

“But this man (Afridi) is talking ill about our country. All I have to say is we have nothing to do with Shahid Afridi. He has no right to speak ill against our country and he should stay in his country and limits.

“He is no more my friend. Maybe he is eyeing a political career. But if so then he should do it at his own strength and not by abusing our PM and our country. If that is the way then I don’t think his political career will last long.”

Talking about why he supported Shahid Afridi Foundation, Harbhajan told the news agency PTI, “It was Afridi who requested me and Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) to do a video in support of his foundation as spread of pandemic doesn't see religion or borders. But then he would time and again make anti-India comments. I feel terrible that I even called him a friend. He is not a worthy human being who can be called a friend. I am done with calling Afridi a friend.”

Gambhir, who is now a BJP MP, said on Twitter, “Pak has 7 lakh force backed by 20 Cr ppl says 16 yr old man @SAfridiOfficial . Yet begging for Kashmir for 70 yrs. Jokers like Afridi, Imran & Bajwa can spew venom against India & PM @narendramodi  ji to fool Pak ppl but won't get Kashmir till judgment day! Remember Bangladesh? (sic).”

Raina wrote on his Twitter account, “Gosh! What all a person must do to remain relevant! Even more so for a nation that is living on alms. So, better do something for your failed nation and leave #Kashmir alone. I am a proud Kashmiri and it is and will always remain an inalienable part of India. Jai Hind! (sic).”

India’s opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan wrote on Twitter, “Is waqt jab saari duniya corona se lad rahi hai us waqt bhi tumko kashmir ki padi hai (Currently, the entire world is battling corona and you are concerned about Kashmir). Kashmir humara tha humare hai aur humara hi rahega (Kashmir was ours, is ours and will always be ours). Chaiyeh 22 crore le ao, humara ek, sava lakh ke barabar hai (Even if you get 22 crore, our one is equal to 15 lakh). Baaki ginti apne aap kar lena (Count the rest on your own) @SAfridiOfficial (sic).”
