Ramanathapuram: Fishermen in the coastal region were seen gearing up for the start of the fishing season. The Tamil Nadu government had called for a 60-day ban on fishing.

The annual fishing ban came into effect on April 15 and will be lifted on June 14 midnight. The officials asked fishermen not to cross the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), and also instructed them to follow the rules and carry fishing permits and identity cards while setting out to sea.

Speaking to reporters, deputy director of Fisheries E Kathavarayan said that the department has sought the assistance of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Indian Navy in preventing fishermen from venturing into the sea on Friday (June 14) evening.
