Ponnamaravathi violence: 1,000 people booked; Section 144 imposed in 30 villages

Ponnamaravathi in Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu turned violent after an audio clip of a conversation between two men from a dominant caste in the state speaking cheaply about women from the other caste, in the background of political developments, went viral. The people from the victim community filed a case against the men conversing in the audio clip, but no action was taken. Following the inaction, angered members of the community, who had filed the complaint, staged protests and damaged public property including electric poles and trees. Even police personnel who reached the spot to control the violent crowd were injured. Following this incident, cases have been booked against at least 1,000 people who were involved in violent protests and Section 144 has been imposed in Ponnamaravathi and 30 surrounding villages.
