India's first elephant rehabilitation centre to open in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram:  Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday inaugurated the construction of the India's first elephant rehabilitation centre in Kotoor, Thiruvananthapuram. The project is funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The aim of the project is to provide elephants world-class facilities including health care.

The construction of the rehabilitation centre will be completed by 2021. The first phase of the rehabilitation centre comes at a cost of Rs 72 crore from the overall budget of Rs 105 crore.

While speaking at the inauguration Pinarayi Vijayan said 441 reservoirs will also be constructed in the rehabilitation centre for the elephants.

The centre will also construct a colony for the family of elephant caretakers
