Think before using a public USB phone charger as it can lead to data theft and cyber scams. Many hackers and criminals are using the 'Juice Jacking' technique to steal people's data via their phones and other portable devices. 

In simple terms, avoid using public charging ports like in airports, restaurants, bus stands, etc as they can hack your phones, empty your bank balance, or leak private data.

The term Juice Jacking was coined in 2011 by researchers trying to create awareness of this serious crime. Cybersecurity experts have warned people about criminals loading malware into public charging ports which can give the criminals access to your data. 

What is Juice Jacking?

It is a cyberattack technique used to export or infect data present in the device. It is done by loading malware at the public USB charging ports. Once these compromised charging ports are used to charge devices like phones, tablets, and laptops, the malware gets installed into the device, giving full access to the hackers. 

Tips to avoid Juice Jacking

Here are some ways to avoid juice jacking and data theft from your device:

• Always use an AC power outlet to charge your devices, as they do not transfer data
• If possible buy a portable power bank. It is the safest option as it diminishes the reliance on public charging points
• Use your own charging cable while charging your phone in public
• Disable data transfer in your phone
• While charging disconnect it from other connected devices 
• If charging in public, try to keep your phone switched off
