The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD) recently released a report about unemployment among India's youth. India comprises the largest youth population in the world with around 66% of the population below the age of 35 years.

The study revealed that in 2022, India had around 83% of unemployed youth, among whom 66% are educated. According to the India Employment Report 2024, the unemployment rate has risen from 54.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022. Currently, the unemployment rate for women is 76.7% and for men is 62.2%.

IHD made a post on X (Twitter) saying, "IHD & @ILONewDelhi hosted Launch of the "India Employment Report 2024: Youth Employment, Education and Skills" by Dr. Anantha Nageshwaran, Chief Economic Adviser to GoI. Discussion, chaired by @profdnayyar shaped the conversation on the future of youth employment in India."

From 2000-2019, the employment rate in India witnessed a rise, but during the COVID period, a sharp decline was reported in employment among the Indian youth.

Discussing the job quality in India, the research stated, "Most young people in developing countries such as India cannot afford to remain unemployed for long but, at the same time, struggle to find decent jobs in the formal economy. Consequently, most youth are underemployed and eking out a living in the informal sector."
