Tamil Nadu had appealed to the Supreme Court against the Mekedatu project as it claimed the project will disrupt the supply of River Cauvery water. However, Karnataka has promised to release the amount of water as directed by the Supreme Court
Karnataka has submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the Mekedatu Dam project to the Centre. Tamil Nadu's plea against the construction of the dam is pending in the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the apex court had granted permission to Karnataka to prepare the DPR of the project. So far Tamil Nadu government's plea that Cauvery water supply to the state will disrupt if Mekedatu project gets a green signal, has not been awarded by the top court. Mekedatu dam is being constructed on River Cauvery, but Karnataka has promised to release the quantity of water directed by the Supreme Court without fail. Karnataka has also got permission to prepare DPR and not start the work on the project. Tamil Nadu government and the Centre has sought more more time to file their responses to Karnataka's DPR and the Supreme Court has adjourned this matter fppr hearing after four weeks.
