Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy turned farmer as he took part in the cultivation of paddy by sowing saplings in a village in Mandya district on Saturday.

Speaking to the media after that, he said that it was not a one-time programme but he would select one village every month and involve himself in the cultivation process for a day.

He said that farmers should change the ways of cultivation and they should get profit and lead a comfortable life.

The JD(S) leader said that earlier the farming community contributed 50% to the nation's GDP but now it has reduced to 15%, and thus there is a need for people's representatives to get involved in such activities and encourage the farmers. He also spoke about the necessity to educate farmers about new technologies.

Kumaraswamy added that his government would waive off Rs 49,000 crore farm loans. He also said that no state in the country has done this.
