The dive of a kingfisher, the flight of an owl and the swim of a penguin inspired scientists to come up with a design for the Shinkansen train that makes a minimal sound while passing through a tunnel, faces little air resistance despite its tremendous velocity and glides along the passage without the friction of wheels on rail tracks.
