The 2011 Census says that there are around 3.12 crore Muslims in Assam of which 12% are indigenous Muslims. They lag behind in terms of social and also political development. Hence this census would help them benefit from various developmental schemes in Assam. Minorities welfare minister of Assam Ranjit Dutta will be meeting with the representatives of the indigenous Muslim community today to seek their suggestions in finalising the framework of the Census.
