Man commits suicide in police custody in Kerala; DGP orders probe

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening just a couple of minutes before the accused, Nawaz, was to be transported and produced before court. He was found dead in the bathroom of the police station.

Kottayam: A Kottayam native who was taken into police custody died in a police station in Kerala. The man, identified as Nawaz, allegedly committed suicide. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, just a couple of minutes before Nawaz was going to be taken to be produced before court. He was found dead in the restroom of the police station.

He was taken in custody by police for attacking people while he was in an inebriated state. DGP has ordered Ernakulam range IG and Kottayam police chief for action to be taken against all the concerned police officials.

The DGP also reportedly said that a magistrate level probe will be conducted as per the human rights commission guidelines and remarked that a custodial death should never occur.
