India’s economy: From empty coffers British left towards $5-trillion club

New Delhi: When the British arrived, India’s share of the world economy was 23 per cent. By the time the British left, it was below 4 per cent.

The colonisers left the nation in penury. From there to today’s $3 trillion economy, it has been a long, rollercoaster journey.

PM Narendra Modi said recently that India is poised to enter the $5 trillion economy club by 2022. Union minister Suresh Prabhu said that the country's economy would quadruple to $10 trillion by 2035 on the back of business-friendly structural reforms.
