Bengaluru: The birthday of Guru Nanak Dev, the first of the ten Sikh gurus and the founder of Sikhism, is observed as ‘Guru Nanak Gurpurab’ across the globe.

Guru Nanak travelled the world to spread the message that there is only one God. He is credited with setting up a distinctive social, political and spiritual platform based on virtue, equality, goodness and love.

Guru Nanak’s thoughts, views and words have been catalogued in the form of 974 poetic hymns in ‘Guru Granth Sahib’, the holy text of Sikhism.

The three guiding principles of Guru Nanak Dev are: "Naam japna, kirat karna, vand chhakna", which means to repeat God's name, to be ready to engage in the labour of one's hands and to be willing to share with others what one has gathered.

Several leaders took to Twitter to wish their followers on this special occasion.
