BWSSB has started using AI and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies to monitor and manage water in borewells. Around 6,900 borewells in Bengaluru are dried out of 14,000 which is an alarming situation exposing the effects of over-urbanisation of the city. 

A ban has been issued on the use of potable water for purposes other than drinking, with a total fine of Rs. 1.1 lakh imposed on 22 citizens so far. 

The Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board prohibits using drinking water for tasks like construction, cultivation, and washing vehicles. If that order is broken, there will be a 5,000 rupee fine. Subsequent breaches will incur a daily charge of Rs. 500 in addition to the initial Rs. 5,000 fine.
 

The Karnataka government assures that severe water problems occurring in the city will soon be solved. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also acknowledged that the borewell at his house has dried up, but he guaranteed a sufficient supply.
 

With a view to monitor the rural drinking water supply systems in villages, ministry of Jal Shakti has decided to take the digital route to use sensor-based IoT devices to effectively monitor the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in more than six lakh villages
