Chennai: Chennai Spartans, with their last two matches of the league stage left, will be facing U Mumba Volley on the opening day of the Chennai leg of RuPay Pro Volleyball League at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

Spartans have won one of their three matches in league stage going down 4-1 and 3-2 to Calicut Heroes and Kochi Blue Spikers respectively. Their only win has come against Black Hawks Hyderabad with a score line of 4-1.

MH Kumara, head coach, Spartans, said “We are home and we are looking forward to just going into the match with one objective that is of winning. The home support will certainly lift our morale. I am also glad that Rudy Verhoeff has come of age in this league and has been leading the team from the front with his game and international experience.”

The league, which is an initiative of Baseline Ventures and Volleyball Federation of India (VFI), began on February 2.

U Mumba has no other option, as they have to win both their matches in order to stay in the competition. Having lost all their three matches now the fate of their team is only lying in their hands.

Pritam Singh Chauhan, head coach of U Mumba, felt that having one clear objective can actually benefit them in the last two matches.

“Losing isn’t an option anymore for us as we have to make sure that we win both our matches. Chennai will have the home advantage with the local crowd supporting them but we can’t allow that effect our determination to win against them,” he said.
