Sydney: Australia defeated India by 34 runs in the first ODI on Saturday to become the first country to win 1,000 international matches.

Chasing 289, India lost their first three wickets for four runs, their joint-lowest score at three-down in ODI history. Rohit Sharma gave India hope with a superb century but that was not enough in the end as the hosts took 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

With his 133 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Rohit has become the first Indian batsman to smash five ODI hundreds in Australia.

Overall, the hundred was the 31-year-old's 22nd in 194 ODIs. Rohit has now hit four consecutive 50-plus scores against Australia in ODI cricket.

Here are the records which Rohit achieved at SCG.

Most ODI tons by an Indian in Australia

With his fifth ODI hundred in Australia, Rohit surpassed his captain Virat Kohli, who had hit four three-figure marks in 50-over contests Down Under. Rohit and Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka are the only visiting batsmen to score five ODI hundreds in Australia. Rohit's record is better than Sangakkara as the former achieved five tons in 28 ODIs while the Sri Lanka took 49 matches.

Matched two ODI greats

Rohit has now reached the level of two great players in the list of the most centuries in ODIs. He equalled India's former captain Sourav Ganguly (22 centuries) and former Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan. While Ganguly scored 22 hundreds in 311 ODIs, Dilshan hit 22 centuries in 330 ODIs. However, Rohit completed this figure in his 194th ODI match.

Shahid Afridi's special record broken

Rohit has also made a special record in the form of six sixes. He has completed 64 sixes in ODIs against Australia. This is the highest number of sixes against a single team. Earlier, the record was with former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who had smashed 63 sixes in ODIs against Sri Lanka.

Amazing record in the form of opener

Not only did Rohit equal Ganguly with 22 ODI centuries, but also as an opener, he left behind the former skipper in the highest number of hundreds by Indian players. Ganguly scored 19 centuries as an Indian opener while Rohit has so far scored 20.

Desmond Haynes’ record shattered

Rohit hit his seventh ODI ton against Australia, going past former West Indies great Desmond Haynes (six ODI centuries). Rohit is just behind former India captain and batting legend Sachin Tendulkar (nine ODI tons against Australia).
