Melbourne: India batsman Rohit Sharma has returned home due to the birth of his daughter and will miss the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney.

Rohit’s wife Ritik Sajdeh delivered a baby girl on Sunday. The duo married in December 2015.

Rohit was part of the India Test team that won the third Test in Melbourne on Sunday. Virat Kohli and his men lead the series 2-1. The fourth Test is from January 3.

The Mumbai batsman will fly back to Australia on January 8 to play the three ODIs starting on January 12.

“India batsman Rohit Sharma left for Mumbai on the 30th of December to attend to his wife who has delivered a baby girl. The BCCI congratulates Rohit on the beginning of a new chapter in his life,” BCCI said in a media advisory on Monday.

“Rohit will miss the fourth and the final Test against Australia at Sydney. There will be no replacement player in the Test squad. 

“He will join the ODI squad on the 8th of January 2019, when the team begins their preparation for the ODI series starting 12th January,” it added.

Earlier, in a chat show with former Australia captain Michael Clarke, Rohit had said fatherhood would change his life.

“I cannot wait to be a father; it is going to be a game-changing moment in our lives. I am eagerly awaiting the moment of becoming a father. It will be a moment to change our life,” Rohit said.
