New Delhi: Former India Captain and cricketing icon Sourav Ganguly has joined the Delhi Capitals franchise of the Indian Premier League as an Advisor. In his new role, Ganguly will work closely with the team’s head coach Ricky Ponting and guide the team in its quest to bring the IPL trophy to Delhi.

"I am very pleased to come on board with the Delhi Capitals," Ganguly said, on his association. “Having known the Jindals and the JSW Group for years, I am now excited to be a part of their latest sports venture. I am really looking forward to working with the players and the support staff.”

"Sourav is one of the most astute minds in world cricket. A lot of what we see in Indian cricket today was born because of Sourav. His aggression, positivity and never say die attitude are traits we want the Delhi Capitals team to imbibe," said Chairman of Delhi Capitals, Parth Jindal.

"It is truly an honour that Sourav has chosen Delhi as his IPL team. I have no doubt that our team will benefit immensely from his experience, guidance and advice. Sourav has been like family to me and I am deeply humbled to have him as an Advisor," Jindal added.

The Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals team will kick-start their season against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, 24th March, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They will play their first home match on Tuesday, 26th March, when they take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.

The Delhi Capitals is one of the eight founding teams that play in the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL). Co-owned by the GMR Group and the JSW Group, Delhi Capitals was established in 2008 as Delhi Daredevils before embracing a new avatar in December 2018. The Delhi Capitals has a home in the Feroze Shah Kotla Stadium.

Currently coached by Australian legend Ricky Ponting, the Delhi Capitals have made the semifinals of the competition on two occasions - in 2008 and 2009, even topping the table in the latter edition. However, the team's high point arrived in the 2012 season where it made the play-off stages of the IPL and the semifinal of the Champions League Twenty20.
