Highlights

Actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar questioned the silence of stars such as Rajinikanth, Vijay and Ajith over the Pollachi sexual assault case that has shocked Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu: The sexual assault case in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu has grabbed national headlines, over the last couple of days. The seriousness of the crime has led the who's who in the south film industry voicing their opinions against the accused.

Many celebrities have condemned the incident, demanding severe punishment for the culprits. Now, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has broken her silence about the gruesome incident as she demands the victims to come out and speak about the events which will only ensure that the culprits would not repeat it.

Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan tore into the ruling AIADMK government of TN questioning the silence of the ministers and top leaders in the Pollachi sex abuse case. "You carry Jayalalithaa's picture in your pocket but what have you done for the safety of women?" "Why is the government silent on the Coimbatore Superintendent of Police naming the woman, who had filed a complaint? How were the videos leaked?" Kamal Haasan lashed out in a video shared on social media.

However, apart from Kamal, none of the big Tamil actors such as Rajinikanth, Vijay, Ajith Kumar have spoken about the incident. We all know, Rajini and Vijay have often responded to such social issues but this time they are remaining mum on the issue.

Later, Varalaxmi also spoke about the incident and also asked Kollywood stars to speak up. She also recalled that many stars did not raise their voice even during the #MeToo movement.

"Even when #metoo movement was happening and me and Chinmayee spoke for it we got support but many top actors didn't talk about it and they still haven't. But they must. As it goes like 'With great power comes great responsibility', top actors should understand that their voice has a great influence among people. They should understand this and talk about important issues," Behindwoods quote her as saying.

The actor felt that the stars can make a difference with their support towards a cause and indicated that it is the right time for them to talk. "I hope, wish and pray that all the actors in a good position, they can definitely make a change. Because if they don't talk about it when it's happening elsewhere in the society, it will someday happen in their house and they will feel bad then," she adds.

She also shared her thoughts on Twitter, following that post, many other celebrities too ventured their opinions on this same issue.
