Gandhinagar: Misfortunes for the Congress continues before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. It has got no ally yet in Karnataka and West Bengal. While in Gujarat, where its national executive committee meet is scheduled on March 12, two of its MLAs resigned from the party and joined BJP.

After a long time, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet is happening in Gujarat, but the rift among the party MLAs in the state can be seen clearly now.

First, it was Asha Ben Patel who quit the party and now it’s Jawahar Chavda Thangdhar and Parsotam Sabariya from Manavar constituency who have joined the BJP.

There is news that MLA Alpesh Thakor may quit the party too, and join the BJP government in Gujarat as a Cabinet minister.

The Lok Sabha elections are approaching and the Congress seems falling apart in Gujarat. Senior leader of the party Ahmed Patel is in the state these days to handle disputes among the party MLAs.

“Lack of respect” from seniors is the reason the quitters cite for resigning from the Congress. Parsotam Sabariya said there was no pressure on him to resign but he wanted to serve the people more efficiently, hence he joined the BJP.

The Congress is not new to such desertions. Last year, senior leader Kunwarjibhai Mohanbhai Bavaliya had resigned from the party, going on to win the election on a BJP ticket. He is currently serving as a Cabinet minister in the Gujarat government.
