New Delhi: Sunil Arora, who was appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner by President Ram Nath Kovind recently, took charge on Sunday. He sought cooperation of political parties and people to make elections "totally free, fair and ethical".

Here are 7 things you should know about the new CEC:

1. A 1980-batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, Arora is the senior-most officer in the Election Commission.

2. Arora succeeded Om Prakash Rawat, who retired on Saturday.

3. As the CEC, Arora will oversee the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. 

4. He will also be responsible for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim that are scheduled to be held next year.

5. As CEC, he will hold office for two years.

6. Arora also served as joint secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation during 1999-2002 and the CMD, Indian Airlines, for five years.

7. He been the information and broadcasting secretary, and secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
