Chennai: Sarkar, featuring Vijay, has courted several controversies with AIADMK expressing its displeasure where several leaders have claimed that the film portrays their party in poor light.

Actor-politician Rajinikanth has come out in support of Sarkar. In his tweet, he said, "After having obtained the censor certificate, the film (Sarkar) gets released. After all this, there are demands to cut certain scenes, there are protests, theatres are vandalised, banners are torn. This is against law. I condemn this."

Recently, actor-politician Kamal Haasan too had come out in support of the film and posted a Tweet stating, "The way this government has been pressuring the film's team, despite having obtained the censor certificate, is not new. A government that cannot take criticisms will eventually be ruined. These people, who are after power, will fall one day. Sincere people with integrity will win."

On November 8, Tamil Nadu MLA Rajan Chellappa held a protest alleging that the film had portrayed former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in poor light. He began to protest against the film Sarkar in front of a movie theatre in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
