New Delhi: NITI Aayog vice chairperson Rajiv Kumar on Wednesday slammed Congress president Rahul Gandhi for criticising Prime Narendra Modi over farmer loan waiver issue. Kumar said, "Gandhi's (state) governments should do their work, others will do theirs.”

Kumar also said that farm loan waiver will help only a fraction of farmers and it is not a solution for their distress.

Kumar also stressed the fact that no government had worked for farmers as much as the Modi government did.

NITI Aayog Member and agriculture policy expert Ramesh Chand seems to agree with Kumar. Chand said, "In poorer states, only 10-15% of farmers are benefited from loan waiver as few numbers of farmers get institutional loans in such states. In many states, not even 25% of farmers avail institutional credit.”

Meanwhile, the Congress had waived farmers’ loan in three states where they won the Assembly elections 2018 — Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Gandhi recently said he would not allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "sleep or rest" till he waived farm loans.
