Imphal: Havoc broke out at Manipur University after midnight raids were conducted by security personnel in the university campus.
 
According to the reports, over 200 security personnel of Manipur police and other security forces on Thursday midnight raided Manipur University campus, arresting over 90 students.


 
The security personnel had raided the boy's hostel of the university inside the campus. The students were reportedly attacked by security personnel who resorted to lathi charge, and the use of tear gas shells.

Several students were injured in the act.
 
Five faculty members have also been taken into custody, following massive tear gas shells and mock bomb attack by the Manipur police commandos.

The 85-day agitation by Members of Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs’ Association (MUSA) demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adiya Prasad Pandey had paralysed functioning of the Manipur University. The agitation ended recently and pro-Vice-Chancellor Y Yogendra Singh, appointed by suspended Vice-Chancellor Pandey, entered the university complex on Thursday evening.
 
It is to be mentioned that due to a long-drawn agitation against Prof Adya Prasad Pandey by the students and teachers in the university campus, the university was in a state of turmoil and the Ministry of Human Resource Development had suspended by issuing an order on September 17 till the completion of the inquiry against him.

Meanwhile, the student movement has been restricted across the university campus and the students are not allowed to go outside the hostel without permission of the police.
 
There are five boy’s hostels in the campus and 55 students of hostel no 5 are reportedly missing since last night.
