Karnataka proposed to build a balancing reservoir on Cauvery river at Mekedatu, Ramanagara District to collect excess water from Cauvery basin. This project would generate electricity and supply drinking water to towns in Ramanagara and Channapatna sub-divisions. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members from the state demanded the Centre to grant permission for the implementation of the Mekedatu project. The ministers held placards and shouted slogans. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu opposes this project by saying that this would deny the share of water from the Cauvery river to them.
