Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has decided to go ahead with the proposal of using English as the medium of learning in government schools, despite opposition from BJP, Congress and pro-Kannada organisations.

The experiment will be carried out by 1000 schools to begin with, said Kumaraswamy.

He said that he wants to stick to the announcement he made during the budget. Even during the budget, many opposed the decision to make English the medium of teaching in government schools. Currently, education is imparted in government schools in Kannada language.

Kumaraswmy said that he was taking this decision keeping in mind, the benefit of poor students from rural areas in Karnataka. Learning in English medium will open wider doors of opportunities to them, is his opinion.

He also said that 90% of those protesting this decision have admitted their children into English medium schools. So he has decided to neglect the delegation opposing the move.

According to a report in News 18, Kumaraswamy has said that he feels nervous while speaking in English as he is conscious about making grammatical errors.

"If this is my case, then think about children studying in rural areas and the issues they are facing. This move is my genuine concern," he said.

To realise this, he has announced Rs 1000 crore fund to provide the needed infrastructure.

It is impossible to surpass the private schools, but introducing English medium can improve the quality of education in government schools and this is the only way to compete with them, he said.
